Discussion during the net:
Happy New Years were shared around the group.

Skip reported that coming home from a holiday visit to Vermont, he was
able to key up the repeater from as far north as Exit 26 on I-91 in
Massachusetts.  The signal was weak/noisy, but he found it interesting
that such range was achieved with the changes made to the repeater.

Following up on some pre-net discussion, we learned that before the
prosign SOS was used, the CW distress call was CQD, heard during the
movie Titanic.  The 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic is
coming up in April, and there is an expectation of some events this
spring to commemorate the event.

There was also brief discussion of approximately when the first
transatlantic telegraph cables were laid.  (Post net note — first
operational cable was completed in 1857; first official transatlantic
telegram was sent by Queen Victoria to President Buchanan…and the
cable degraded shortly thereafter; first successful cable went into
service 28 July 1866)

Don mentioned regarding Leon, KB1CQ (SK), that he plans to bring a
sympathy card to tomorrow night’s Connecticut DX Association meeting
for folks to sign.

Don also reminded participants that the Bloomfield VE sessions will
continue at the end of the month, as scheduled.

In addition, there was significant informal discussion regarding
makes/models of loaner power supplies, and making sure that everyone
involved is adequately equipped with a working power supply.

Skip also reminded folks that he has several loaner rigs and power
supplies available, and that if we are aware of any new hams who need
a little help getting on the air, that they should be put in touch
with him.
